How to Handle Mistakes in Your Business
---------------------------------------
You might be surprised but there is a great advantage in
making mistakes in business. Like it or not, you are bound
to make your share of them. Forgotten deadlines, calls not
returned on time, lost cats, misplaced documents. We all
commit some of these at one time... or another...
Of course, life would be wonderful without them, but don't
hold your breath -- they WILL happen to you too.
Mistakes are precious opportunities to learn and improve
as we go. It is costly education, so take advantage of it!
The more mistakes you make, the better you become, provided
you don't repeat the same mistakes over and over again...
Now, THAT's stupid!
Here are suggestions to keep in mind when recovering from
business mistakes -- they will help you remain a winner:
- If your mistake affects your clients, don't hide it. Do
not pretend that nothing happened. That is the worst you
can do. If they discover it themselves, they might never
trust you again! People respect integrity more than you
may imagine and admire those who have courage.
- Don't procrastinate with communicating what happened. Time
will NOT make your seller forget that you left the front
door unlocked or that some important document was not
delivered on time. Time will just MAGNIFY your mistake.
The faster you deal with it, the better.
- Admit you were wrong and apologize sincerely. Don't be
afraid to appear incompetent. You will only show that you
are human. People like that quality in others.
- Apologize in person -- there is magic in being able to
look in someone's eyes. If it's a long distance situation,
apologize on the phone. Forget about email.
- Correct the mistake ASAP. The faster you correct it, the
more extra brownie points you score (obvious, yet so
many people miss this opportunity to recover!).
- Go a step further. Offer something to rebuild a goodwill
and trust. Saying "I'm sorry" might be not enough. Offer
flowers or a small gift. And yes, sometimes you might want
to discount your fee -- nothing is more expensive than
a dissatisfied buyer or seller!
- Promise it will not happen again and keep the promise.
After all, learning is about finding out why we make
mistakes and removing their causes.
Mistake when handled properly, is an opportunity to build
even a stronger relationship with your client. Keep in mind
that people will not remember your mistakes as much as they
will remember how effective (or not) you are in handling
those difficult situations.

Procrastination - can you identify with this?

A painfully shy man fell in love with a young woman. He
sensed that she felt the same way, but he couldn't find
the courage to ask her out.
Finally he decided he would mail her a love letter every
day for one year, and then ask her for a date. Faithfully,
he followed his plan, and at year's end he was courageous
enough to call her -- only to discover... she'd married
the letter carrier!
Pick up the phone and follow up with your prospects. No
matter how good is your newsletter and other stuff, real
estate is STILL the contact sport. if you don't connect
with people, they will do business with your competition!
